Your Questions About Workout Gear

Joseph asks…
I’m looking to enlist under 18X and go SFAS ultimately getting in SFQC?
I have been training following various special ops workouts for the last 2ish years. I’m going to graduate college in May with the intent of going Special Forces. My Army PFT scores right NOW are around 280, I’m going to spend 6 months prior to going to basic training exclusively for SFAS (rucks, PT, running etc) even in boots and BDU gear (though no gun or anything, obviously, just boots, pants and jacket). With PFT scores above 300 by the time I take the test at SFAS and with ASVAB scores well above 110, can anybody give me an honest and realistic assessment of my chances of passing selection?

While 18X is not my favorite path to a Green Beret…. I think your chances are better than average….. I would be careful not to over train or injure yourself….. Go slow and steady
Your physical conditioning is important but we are more interested in your mental attitude…. Your commitment….
Three general rules
One step at a time…. Concentrate on that next task….that next push up
Never quit….run till you drop; crawl till you pass out….
No whining, bitching or excuses….. Get the job done

Advice on routine for toning muscle with a 3 time a week gym visit schedule?
I’ve read a lot of different online articles, but they all seem to be geared towards selling a product. Right now the only thing I intend to use is muscle milk. It works, I know people who says it does help. Its not expensive and its not going overboard. However, my question is left with this: What routine would be best to build tone? Every guide I have read wants to sell me some guide, which means it most likely isn’t going to work. Between work and school, I only get to visit the gym about 3 times a week – but I stay for at least an hour each visit. Typically I run a 1 mile warmup at about 8 minute mile pack, then do 3 set of 25 rep, 15 rep, 10 rep on various machines ; Depending on the machine. I have been seeing some result but – i feel that if I knew more about how to work out properly I would get more tone out of my workout. Any advice or suggestions?

25 reps is much too much first off. For toning you should hit 12-15, reps for about 3 sets on various machins focusing on certain muscles for that day. For example since your doing 3 days you should make one day back/chest, another day bicep/triceps and the last day legs/shouldrs. About 2 machines per muscle group should be fine for toning. Here is a great site that does sell stuff but it has it seperated, it has its store website, its articles website, and forums. Very helpful.

Good luck and feel free to ask me any more questions regarding this for more information and help.
P.S. Also for toning keep up the running and cardio as well, and dont forget the abs

How can i make my girls high school lacrosse team?
hello(: so i have never had any prior experience in lacrosse before. i’ve been researching it, and it seems like such a great game to me! Tryouts are in late february/early march i believe, and i want to know what i should do to get myself good enough to try out. my school has jv and varsity, i am intending to make jv. jv consists of freshman and sophomores, so about 40 players may make the team i think? i’m not sure. i’m a freshman. i just bought my lacrosse gear and am going to start running 2 miles everyday at the gym. i’m also thinking of signing up for a camp and/or doing the workouts my school offers for lacrosse. is there anything else specific that i should work on to help my cradling or passing? Sharon asks…
I want an awesome body in 5/6 months, few questions?
Basically, I was doing well and seeing some results by doing some strength training 3-4 nights a week. Then the end of the semester hit and I was staying up until 1, 2, even 3 am most nights then getting up at 7 for about two or three weeks. I was so busy, I barely had time to do workouts.
I also gave up on eating properly and lived off grilled cheese, mac and cheese and pizza. Basically carbs and cheese.
Now finals are over and I’m starting second semester but I have this…gut. I never used to have a muffin to when I sat, now I do. Any bit of a roll when I sit down was almost gone. It’s back. I can actually grab my fat, it wasn’t like that before
I want to be really thin by summer. I need some diet tips.
I’m a vegetarian. I’m about 5’1, 5’2. I have wider hips, a fairly flat chest and a medium/small frame.I refuse to weigh myself anymore and instead just go by looking in the mirror or how my clothes fit, but last time I checked I was around 105.
I’m wondering how little I can eat so that I lose weight, but don’t send my body into starvation mode. Normally I have a cup of tea w. skim milk and a piece of toast with butter for breakfast, a 100 calorie fibre one bar and an apple or 100 calorie bag of sunchips, but sometimes just the granola bar then after school I’ll snack on junk (which I’m really trying to stop). But sometimes I’ll have a 12 grain bagel with butter (too much food, right?). For dinner I often have some kind of home made pizza or a pasta dish with salad or some kind of vegetarian thing like veggie nuggets or a veggie burger, with fries.
I think I eat too much, or at least way too many carbs. How could I modify my diet?
As for exercise, I’m working on finding ones that work better for me. When I do strength training I do everything… arms, abs, legs/butt. Should I be doing this every other day? Every day?
How long and how often should I do cardio? I used to do cross country but it’s nearly impossible for me to do in winter since I don’t have the money to invest in proper thermal gear and half the time the sidewalks aren’t shoveled or are icy. I have a stationary bike, but I’m kind of short for it even when it’s adjusted to the shortest setting. What could I do instead?
btw, my main areas of focus are
-flatter stomach
-thinner thighs
-overall loss of fat, gain of LEAN muscle (I DO NOT want to get bulky)
Thank you very much, I appreciate it

While you need to eat regularly you need to know about portion size in relation to your body for healthy dieting. Understand the concepts of regular eating and portion control and you can enjoy healthy dieting, lose weight and never feel hungry. Eating 5 meals a day is actually ideal. By eating frequently you achieve the following:
1. Eating frequently prevents hunger pangs and curbs over eating.
2. Eating more often keeps your metabolism working quickly so you burn calories more efficiently.
3. Food is also absorbed more efficiently and quickly when we eat regularly.
Many people actually make the mistake of not eating or eating very little, without realizing that in order to jump start your metabolism and burn fat, you have to eat.
On the subject of strength training, it is usually better to work upper / lower body on separate days, split up muscle groups, etc. However, if you do not over-do-it it should be ok. To say healthy, fit, and lose weight, running, swimming, or cycling are going to be your best bets. However, there are many ways to get cardiovascular training. It may sound silly, but I would recomend jumping rope especially if you are stuck indoors with little time on your hands:
Jumping rope can burn up to 1000 calories per hour, making it one of the most efficient workouts possible. It tones muscles in the entire body, developing long, lean muscles in all major muscle groups, both upper and lower. Jumping rope optimizes cardiovascular conditioning and maximizes athletic skills by combining agility, coordination, timing, and endurance.

Sandra asks…
Should I quit football?
Realizing. No experience I played last year for the first time(joined about 2 games before mid-season) but one coach NEVER let me participate in practice because it was my first year I’m guessing.
At first I tried to play WR/CB but I realized at my speed it wasn’t gonna happen. So for the meanwhile I played the line/special teams. Which now I realize 157 lbs and I’m 5’9 I was too small.
Everything was a mess last year. Head JV coach not coaching, letting random coaches that he played with coach. Coaches changing every week. And the only time I did play was when we ran a 5-2 another random coach just threw me in a day before the game cuz someone didn’t show up. I got 2 sacks and a fumble recovery. and I won’t lie, it wasn’t even good hits, and even to today I have trouble hitting because I never keep my feet moving but I’m not afraid of contact. I more-so wrestled him to the ground.
Now its my second year, I can hit a bit better but still lack to keep my feet moving. I don’t feel like I’m getting better. And this year I went for LB because of the success I had last year in that one game. Then the new coaches tell me no go with the linemen when he first says I want big people with linemen.
He said it was my speed. My 40 was a 5.1 which was the first 40 I ever ran in my life. no stance no nothin. I felt I coulda ran it in 4.8
Meh now I think I should quit. Its not that im being a pus*sy about it. I can handle the intense sprints and workouts. Its just I feel I really have no talent but the other part of me wants to stay because I love the sport. And I’ve went through so much bs already why quit but now? I wonder if I’m wasting my time. All I do is work hard, I never half assed. Even at home now or during the off season I ran, did shuttle runs, and jump rope to work on my foot work to play LB and it doesn’t seem to pay off.
And whats worse is he has a kid smaller, slower and less aggressive, has no stance, and doesn’t attempt to make much contact or is even in the right place on a simple blast right. I mean the first day we started hitting he wasn’t even tryin to get smacked he went on the sled with the linemen for no reason? wtf? I went hit, coach said im good but i need to keep my feet moving and I’m too high so of course I got ran over a few times.
Which I don’t understand. Or maybe I should play for another school. I dunno anymore. Its not because I didn’t get the position I wanted, its because I’m tired of being thrown around so much between positions. I don’t mind playin D-line at all if I’m put there, O-line on the other hand I don’t wanna play.(I can’t stand offense)
But mostly I think I don’t have any talent. I I thought hard work, dedication and love for the sport would be enough and everything would fall into place but I guess its nothing unless you have talent anymore.
Or maybe im bit*ching too much and I need to suck it up like last year, get faster and stronger and try again. I don’t know I understand no one reading this has seen me play or might misunderstand what I wrote and they really can’t help me but I’m in a corner and I don’t know what to do. I’m thinkin after another week I’ma turn in my gear and quit all sports. Football, wrestling, and lacrosse. which i played to improve for football.
