Your Questions About Pilates Workout

Mary asks…

How long would it take to have flat abbs with the pilates workout?

I am a pre-teen. My friend told me about the pilates workout, so how long would it tale to have flat abbs, if you are a pre-teen girl, abput 5 ft 5 in, and around 132 lbs or so. Please help me with this!!!

Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Well, I’m 5’4, 13 yrs old and after 3 classes i see a samll difference. But it really depends on the posture of your back.
If you Jennifer Lopes type back and butt you will see a difference. Now if you have a flat back and butt it will take time to notice a difffernce. Also pilates HELPS to get flat abs to get those abs you’lll need to eat a high protein diet!

Linda asks…

Can Men use the regular Winsor Pilates workout tapes?

About a year ago my sister bought some Winsor Pilates tapes with Mari Winsor as the head instructor. Lately I’ve been thinking about getting into pilates and I was wonder if these tapes my sister bought would be an effective workout for me or if I needed to buy Pilates for Men. Is there a big difference?

Yoga Wear Guru answers:

I have the Windsor Pilates tapes myself, and I’ll tell you right now that there is a man on the tapes doing the workouts as well.

William asks…

Can i have the opinion of someone who uses the pilates workout for abs?Do you think its hard enough to?

actuaaly work.i mean have you seen any results from the abs workout?I just bought the pilates abs workout and the lower body workout from target,it seemed so easy that i did the ab workout twice the night i bought it?If you use this workout give me your opinion on if it works for you.i mean has it helped flatten your abs?

Yoga Wear Guru answers:

I thought it was really difficult to do. You may have wrong form and that’s why it’s easy for you. The best thing for you to do is go to a local Pilates studio that has classes and just join one class to get your form correct. That way, when you go home and watch the videos you will know what to do.

Susan asks…

20 minute pilates workout okay twice a day?

Is it okay to do an intermediate level pilates workout twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) or would that be too much? If it wouldn’t be wise to do it twice, which would be better, morning or night?

Yoga Wear Guru answers:

That sounds fine, it is all about personal preference. If you can do that much pilates in a day, it is fine.

Robert asks…

Does the Winsor Pilates workout help me get rid of cellulite?

I have some cellulite on my legs, and I started doing this things called Pilates. Are they efficient against cellulite?

Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Yes, it is efficient against fighting cellulite.

Pilates is not an easy form of exercise. Nor is it an exercise that is for women, only. You must gain awareness of muscles and motor patterns of muscle movements that you may have never been aware of before. It takes practice and dedication to develop these skills. The more experience you gain with Pilates the more you will feel the most basic and essential level exercises. Pilates begins with some basic principles and builds from there into essential, intermediate, and advanced level exercises.

In the Pilates workout we are assuming that you have some knowledge of the mat Pilates exercises and how to engage the proper muscles. Due to the fact that Pilates can be a complicated form of exercise it is recommended to complete 10-20 private sessions before attempting to do the Pilates workout on your own. Now lets get started.

Warm Up to get connected with your core muscles with some deep breaths engaging the Transverse with each exhale and trying to hold it on with the inhale. Then with your breath move the pelvis from neutral to imprint focusing on staying engaged in the core.
Also draw awareness to your shoulder girdle by shrugging the shoulders up with the inhale and down into a stabile position with the exhale.

AB PREP 8 reps knees bent, arms at side, inhale to prepare then flex the spine into the ab prep position, inhale to hold and exhale to lower down. Repeat ab prep 8 times.

EXTENSION 5 reps lie prone, legs together, belly pulled up toward the spine, arms bent up with palms overlapping under the forehead, keep forehead on the hands and inhale to prepare, exhale to extend, lifting up slightly. Hover just above the surface with upper traps relaxed, inhale to hold, exhale to return.

HUNDREDS 10 sets of 10 lie supine with legs in a table top position, arms at side. Inhale to prepare, exhale to flex spine. Pumping the arms, inhale for 5 counts, exhale for 5 counts, repeat 10 times. Stay in the flexed position with the back imprinted.

SPINE TWIST 5 reps to each side seated with legs straight out and together. If you cannot sit upright with straight legs sit on a block to take the tension out of the hamstrings. Arms out to the side, inhale to prepare, exhale to twist, inhale to rotate. Repeat to the other side.

SHOULDER BRIDGE 10 reps each leg lie supine, knees bent, your feet lined up with sit bones and arms by the sides. Inhale to prepare, exhale to lift the hips up, inhale to lift one leg straight up, exhale to lower that leg down to the height of the bent leg, then lift it right back up. Do 10 reps each leg.

SIDE LYING LEG LIFT 10 reps each side lie on side, legs stacked on each other. Inhale to prepare, exhale to lift the legs together, inhale to lower. Keep legs together and straight. Repeat on other side 10 reps

SHELL STRETCH roll to a prone position and push back to sit back on heels with arms stretched out over head. This is similar to fetal position. If shoulders are tight you can keep your arms down at your sides.

This is just a simple Pilates workout that can be done everyday. This Pilates workout is a balance of flexion, extension, rotation, hip extension, and side flexion. You can certainly add additional exercises to this Pilates workout to make it more challenging, but this is a good starting point. This workout can be done anywhere and can be really helpful if done in the middle of your work day to stretch muscles that routinely tighten up while seated at your desk.

    Your Questions About Pilates

    Steven asks…

What is more effective for losing belly fat, pilates or walking for 30 min?

I workout 5 days a week and eat healthy, but what would be more of a benefit for the stomach, pilates or walking? I feel like walking mostly helps my legs and thighs, but I really need to lose the love handles and mid section. I am thinking of alternating 2 different types of pilates instead of 1 type of pilates and walking for 30 min, any suggestions?

    Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Some trainers will not tell you this: pilates, crunches or set ups won’t make you lose belly fat. They will strengthen your abs but you will not be able to see results until you lose the fat first. Now to answer your question, follow aerobics plane or run instead of walking and with the proper diet you will lose that fat. Do abs workout as well it burns calories and with time you will see a big difference also a good advise is to steam your vegetables instead of regularly cooking them specially broccoli and other fiber filled veggiess.
    Best of luck.

    Mandy asks…

How long should I do my pilates work out?

I am 5’2 and weigh 127 pounds. I want to lose between 10-15pounds in time for the summer. I walk at 3 miles per hour on the treadmill for 20-40 minutes everyday and I do pilates for around 15 minutes. Should I do pilates longer?

    Yoga Wear Guru answers:

If weight loss is your primary goal now, you should focus on the activities which burn the most calories. These are the intense aerobic workouts, including running, cycling, cross-country skiing, swimming and rope skipping. Running stadium steps will burn a tremendous number of calories too.

Pilates is great as well, and is very important in maintaining your flexibility. Muscle strains are the most common sports injuries, and incorporating it into your exercise routine will help avoid them. Fifteen minutes of Pilates is sufficient if you focus for that length of time. Make sure the large muscles of your body–the glutes and hamstrings–are being stretched after you walk.

Walking three miles per hour burns about 300 calories in one hour. If you could step the pace up, you could burn twice that amount, adding an exta half pound of weight loss each week. Try gradually moving from walking to running. The best way to do this is to run until you are too tired to run any more, then to walk, then back to running, etc. Soon, you will be able to run an hour without stopping to walk at all.

Jack Lalanne, perhaps the best example of superior physical fitness in the world, will be celebrating his 95th birthday in September by swimming twenty miles in the Pacific Ocean. He suggests varying your routine monthly so that all your muscles are being used. If he can swim twenty miles, at his age, you can run for an hour. Just build up to it gradually.

Anyway, you are doing great. You are already fitter than average. Do you know the average woman in the Unites States is now five-four-and-a-half, 158 pounds?

God bless you and your efforts to become even fitter.

    Daniel asks…

Which is the best pilates machine on the consumer market?

I am looking to purchase a pilates machine for home use. My mom has an Aero pilates she got from QVC with a rebounder and loves it. A friend has the Pilates Performer and swears its the best. Does anyone have any experience with these machines and suggest a good one? I am a beginner.
    Thanks!
I want a machine. I hurt my knee and back in an accident and need some support. The doctor recommended a trainer, but I cannot afford that. I am a college student..

    Yoga Wear Guru answers:

You don’t need a machine for pilates! Simply do it on a mat. Use a towel.

    John asks…

How many minutes of pilates should I do?

I am wanting to put pilates in my work out routine. I do 45 minutes of cardio a day and was going to start doing pilates, but how many minutes of it should I do? I planned on doing it 5 days a week after I do my cardio. Also, anyone who has done pilates, how long did it take until you started seeing results?

    Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Do it on non consecutives days and start with 20 minutes and work from there. Good Luck!

    Ruth asks…

What is the difference between stability ball and pilates sand ball?

What’s the difference between the two and which one works better? Some sites says pilates help you keep fit and looses more weight than stability. Can we use pilates sand ball at home?

I think this will answer part of your question.

The stability ball adds a challenge to your workout.

Your Questions About Pilates Vs Yoga

      Sandy asks…

What are the benefits of Pilates vs. yoga? I’m a yoga fan, but Pilates looks intriguing…?

      Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Pilates centres around the core. If you think of a tree the trunk is the core and the roots the legs and branches the arms. It is a great form of exercise that you lengthens and leans out muscles greater than any other type of exercise.

It is a great way to get fit and you can use the same disciplines in every exercise you do. I use it for boxing, running and spin. Aqua aerobics is pilates in the water so once you understand the methodology you get double the workout using any other exercises as you really learn to turn on your core.

      Laura asks…

Pilates vs.Yoga vs. Eliptical Machine vs. Swmming? (Please Help!)?

Does anyone know how many calories pilates, and yoga burn? Which is better? Or is it better to just use an eliptical machine? Or is it better to swim? Please answer anything!

      Yoga Wear Guru answers:

To burn calories you should do cardio! So Running or Swimming is the answer.

Pilates as Yoga are “body toning exercises”. Yoga “c’est du passé”.
Now “the way” is Pilates. Madonna is doing Pilates so it must work.

If you like to LOOK BETTER VISUALLY pretty fast than go for Pilates.

      Hope this help.

      Lisa asks…

      pilates vs. yoga?

which one is better? i started to do this beginners pilates video that’s an hour long and it seems to be working (i can feel my abs getting tighter) but is it better than yoga? i’ve never done yoga before, but i have a similar beginners video for yoga too. should i do yoga, pilates, or both? which one is better?

      Yoga Wear Guru answers:

I think pilates is better because it’s not only postures, but it also uses machines (well, I guess not in your video), and it makes you more flexible and stronger, too. Yoga technically wasn’t designed to help people get more flexible or stronger, it’s just to help you get deeper into meditation. But you should do yoga, too. And meditation.

      Carol asks…

Pilates vs Yoga… Benefits of both?

I am a 14 year old girl. I run and swim and I have started pilates. What are the benefits of it? Is yoga better and how often should I do it for and how long?

      Thanks:)

      Yoga Wear Guru answers:

OMG I’m 14 too and I asked questions about does yoga help too. Just lyke you I run and swim. People answered my question by saying yoga is 10 times better. Pilates will make you bulkier, and not sooo slim. Yoga losens up your mucsules and fat, and makes you more flexiable. My route I did was on school days in the morning I would go onto yogajournal.com and look at different poses everyday, for about 5 mins. And i did the same thing after dinner, too. Yoga is soo much better, it helps me run so much fast and swim longer without getting tired. Trust me it works!!

      Chris asks…

Pilates VS Yoga Question. 10 POINTS!!?

So I just bought a yoga book & a pilates book.
      I just did them both..
After the pilates I felt well exercised, and relaxed.
But after the yoga, i felt nothing.. and it kind of seemed boring to just sit there, pose and breath.

What’s the benefits of each? Which one is better? Which one will i see results faster with?

      Yoga Wear Guru answers:

If you are looking for a good workout and a way of toning your body, go with the pilates. Pilates is more intense than yoga.

My field is in fashion, as a result many people ask me how they can slim down. My answer is always the same: good diet and exercise. But I found this great product (all natural) which I think helps a lot in the process. I recommend you check this website
http://www.think-fit.info , they have a free trial and you only pay $6.95 shipping and handling. Good luck!

        Jenny asks…

What online websites exist that provide excersises for the aero pilates machine?

My wife purchased this machine over a year ago, and of course hasn’t used it once. I believe it can work wonders in my quest for greater flexibility, but we have lost the instructional dvd’s. I’d love to find something online, but if not, be guided to an informative website on what I need to acquire.

        Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Im not sure what machine you are referring to – but a great website offering very professional exercise videos is http://www.workoutsondemand.com – they offer online workouts and you can even download the exercise videos to your computer.

        Linda asks…

What is the difference between a Areo Pilates Machine and the Total Gym?

Does anyone use either? My sister wants one or the other for her birthday coming up, but they both look so similar to me.

        Yoga Wear Guru answers:

        Huge difference!
For the Aero Pilates Machine, you get ripped off by Pilates.
For the Total Gym, you get ripped off by some other dude.

Decide on who you think is more deserving to throw your money away to.

The diet/fitness world is full of supplement pills, weight gain supplements, and machines that promise all this amazing stuff but don’t deliver. The tools to become fit are right in front of you. If your sister want so become fit, instead of buying her some expensive heap of metal that won’t help her, but her Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Don Venuto. It’s not some stupid diet book like most of the other fitness books out there. It’s based on science and observation and will tell you how to get fit and stay fit.

If you still want to get your sister a machine, get her a treadmill. It’s the machine that comes closest to actually being effective (although just plain running is better)

        To lose fat:
        1. DON’T BELIEVE THOSE FAD DIETS!
        2. DO NOT STARVE YOURSELF! Unless you are 4ft tall, a 1,200 calorie a day diet is DANGEROUS and won’t work in the long run.
        3. Calculate your BMR. Do a google search. A good calculator would ask for your age, height, weight, and activity level.
        4. Eat healthy and eat about 500 calories a day less than your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Your BMR is how many calories you need per day to maintain your current weight.
        5. Eat 5-6 small meals a day. This keeps your metabolism up. Each meal should include fruits, veggies, water, and protein.
        5. Drink at least 64oz (8 8oz glasses) of water a day. No soda (that includes diet soda).
        6. Do light/moderate cardio 3 to 5 times a week for 30 to 45 minutes each time. Running, bicycling, and swimming are great for this.
        7. Do some strength training to make sure you lose fat and not muscle. Don’t worry; you won’t look like the hulk if you lift weights.
        8. You should lose about 1-2lbs per week. If you lose more than that, chances are the rest is stool, water weight, or even muscle mass.
        9. Weigh yourself only once a week at the same time (ie every Friday morning). Your weight fluctuates a lot during any 24hour period because of water and food intake and also bowel movements.
Be patient and be smart. If you follow this guideline you will be very happy with your results.

        Susan asks…

Is my pilates machine a fake?

I just bought a second hand pilates machine. It says on the front of it: TOTAL TRAINER FLEX PRO – yet when I look for this name on the internet I can’t find any such name. Does a Total Trainer Flex Pro exist – or is it a fake?
ĶΪŦŤŸ – it looks similar to those, but not the same. ALSO THERE ARE NO WEIGHTS/DUMBELLS INCLUDED!! – I see them in both those pics – Isn’t it supposed to have them?

        Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Does it look like this? Http://www.amazon.co.uk/Total-trainer-TT2500P-Trainer-Flex/dp/B000WOUCZ2

        or this?

        William asks…

Should I buy a pilates machine or a total gym?

I have mucho weight to loose thanks to the baby. I’ve been looking at both of these products and they seem rather similar to me. Does anyone know which one really works best, and which one it the best for the money? I’m trying not to go over $400

        Yoga Wear Guru answers:

The Pilates machines that are out on the market, are not the same quality as you would find in the Pilates studios. You can do Pilates, and very well with a good dvd, that was great advice. So many good ones out there.
The total gym is well worth the money. It is easy to use, and is as difficult as you want it to be, you can start out at the beginner level and work your way up. Remember when you use it, you will be working all of your muscle groups, so you’ll need to do it every other day. Perhaps a cardio dvd or taking a walk on the other days would be what you need. You’ll really like it. We had one in a gym that I worked in at a ski resort, and we trained our clients with it. It’s challenging, and challenging is what we all need. Go for it! Remember to start out easy and work your way up gradually to the harder exercises!

Opinions on MALIBU PILATES CHAIR EXERCISER?

I would like any opinions on the exercise chair,if you have tried them. Thanks A x

          Yoga Wear Guru answers:

It works, it is fun too. It is really lengthening my body and my muscles, I am seeing ab muscles I didn’t know I had .. Just make sure you know how to use it, read the manuals watch the dvds, if you just get it and jump on it and don’t do the exercises properly you might not be doing them right and you won’t see the results. Honestly I haven’t changed my diet (its not too bad) but have been doing the Pilates (with the malibu pilates chair) and my jeans are loose and falling off me. I’ve only been doing it for a little over a month and you can get your heart rate up a lot too and get cardio going … It is my favorite exercise equipment I have ever used! It also really stretches you out and strengthens you core (abs, obliques and back) I love it!

            Carol asks…

            Pilates…?

I would really like to try some pilates as I have pretty bad posture, and as I already do kickboxing and weights alot during the week and have not much time for anything else was wondering If I can do pilates from a DVD at home? is it easy to follow of a dvd? or do you think I should do a few classes to get the basics down pat?

            Yoga Wear Guru answers:

If, you really want to get into then I would recommend taking at least a few classes to make sure your doing it right. Then you can move to a dvd, they are usually very good. Make sure that you get the easiest and move up to the next level when the easy isn’t a challenge anymore. They also have free videos on demand/on command if you have that. It’s annoying at first but then you will learn to love it. Good luck!

            Nancy asks…

What is the difference between Pilates in a gym and Pilates in a studio?

I’ve heard that Pilates in a gym is not real Pilates and that is wasn’t very safe.

            Yoga Wear Guru answers:

The qualification process for each is quite different. The gym instructors usualy only do a 4-12 day qualification couse as aposed to most studio instructors who usually complete a more comprehensive 12-18 month course depending on the institute.

The best thing to do is to ask who they are qualified through and ask how long their pilates course was. APMA instructors are required to complete intensive courses to a very high standard.

You can make the desision on what you would like to do, pactice under an instructor that has 4 day or 18 months of training.

            Maria asks…

Is pilates a really good form of exercise?

I am currently trying to loose weight, and so far its going well. In 5 weeks I have lost 11 pounds (5 kilo’s) through basic healthy eating and would like to exercise more. I hate the gym, and have just taken up pilates… I certainly felt it working the next day!! But does any one know if long term it will aid my weight loss?

            Yoga Wear Guru answers:

Yes, Pilates will help you, but in itself it is not enough. For healthy weight loss that you can sustain long-term you need to combine healthy eating habits (which you’ve started doing – congratulations!) with cardio training (brisk walking, cycling and such like) and resistance work like pressups, squats and so on which build and strengthen muscles. Pilates does its bit by strengthening your inner muscles which makes the rest of your exercise much more effective.
If you hate the gym, try getting a Personal Trainer to teach you a home programme, or go to some classes. You don’t need to love exercising – you just need to DO it!!
            Best of luck.

Madison is quoted as saying that he believed the states should only be permitted to exercise power when the exercise of that power was subordinately useful. What do you think he meant by that

I am starting to eat clean. Can you please give me some motivation, quotes, positive stories;to keep going?

I need to lose 50 pounds. I love bread and I love chocolate. However, I have cut out bread and am only eating chocolate on Sat evenings. But, not a load of it. I do not eat fast food, soda, red meat, pork or dairy. However, I need motivation, your success story, quotes whatever to keep it up. I am guessing it will take close to 7 months of clean eating and exercise! Thanks in advance!

I dont know about others but i put myself into this mindset that im like a machine (lol hear me out) that depending on the food i eat depends on how well my body works overall (mental and physical) if i eat healthy small regular meals through out the day i am more switched on, have more energy and just generally in a better mood. I was suprised to see how much better i feel after eating healthy food often. I also felt that the more knowledge i had on health and fitness the easier it was to consume food i otherwise dont/didnt like.
