Your Questions About Yoga Workout Wear

Chris asks…
What do you think about wearing “non convention/normal” clothes in public? (exercise pants?)?
I’m not showing yet but my pants are digging in a little big, especially since my pants are only a few inches below my belly button, they aren’t low rise. I was thinking about wearing my gym clothes to school, but I am the type of person who wears normal clothes when I go out! I have like workout/yoga capris that have a very comfy non elastic waistline. Do you think it is innappropriate? I don’t TD for honest answers, I don’t think it is appropriate to wear pjs in public. Especially since I’m not really showing yet. I feel like i”ll just look like a bum.

Personally I think the women I see in the grocery stores wearing pajamas look…well kinda trashy to be honest. It’s one thing if you are sick buying medicine at walgreens but to wear pjs in public just isn’t my thing…
Have you considered buying a bella band? I got mine at Target for about $15. It helps cover your jeans so you can leave them unbuttoned while you are in the “in between” stage.
Another option is Old Navy maternity jeans. They offer a real waist style that has a normal looking waist that stretches-they are so cute and extremely comfy! You can pair yoga pants with maybe a polo style shirt and cardigan too. I would just avoid the plaid pj bottoms or anything that has writing across the bum in public lol.

Ruth asks…
Good workout regimen? – 5ft ~105 lbs?
I want to start going to the gym on a regular basis and tone up. On any given day I way somewhere between 104 and 110 lbs. I wear a size 2 and am not really looking to lose 10 pounds, I just want to tone up and feel comfortable in my size 25 pants without feeling like I have a muffin top. I want to do something like jog or run on a treadmill and then do weights (weights every other day?). I’m not sure what intensity I should run to burn off the extra fat and what machines/ number of reps to do to build some muscle definition. I also do yoga to try and keep my muscles leaner instead of bulky. Also – I used to play soccer and have huge calves because of it – any exercises on making them a little leaner?
- I am also 16 years old – so It’s difficult for me to burn off calories. A year ago I weighed around 125. now I’m about 105. I need a good regimen to get those last ~5 lbs off and tone up!

In order to burn off that muffin top fat, you will have to do lots of cardio. It’s so much easier to put on a pound of fat than it is to take off. Do some cardio (at least 20-40 minutes) 4/5 times a week. Your goal is to hit about 70%/80% max heart rate. Most treadmills/ellipticals have calculators built in. To burn fat, you will have to SWEAT. Also if you want to keep your metabolism up and the calories burning when not working out, weight training is important. Lean up. Do about 2 major muscle groups alternating every other day. Shoot for about 12-15 reps 3 sets each. Choose weight accordingly. Take a day of rest once a week. During the rest day you muscles get to recoup and a lot of good stuff happens. 1 day of rest is much more beneficial then working everything out every day. Stretching is very very crucial to keeping those muscles long and lean. Maybe do some yoga and pilates twice a week. Eat a healthy balanced diet and you should be fine. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you need any more help.

Linda asks…
What kind of tight, sexy workout/dance material (specifically for pants) will best hide excessive sweating?
I have been more and more active, especially in Zumba. I only want to rock those “yoga/dance” pants while working out and sweating hard. What I DON’T want is for the sweat to show through in icky, random places (say….my butt/bikini line/chest, etc while teaching a class? EW???) I want to look good – isn’t that part of why we go the gym in the first place, after all? =] I know it sounds picky & shallow, but I DO notice it on others & go “eek” FOR them, so I don’t want it for myself, either! (That being said, don’t bother with the “Sweating is natural – no one will care, blahblah” advice) So, is this material Spandex….Lycra….a blend? The stuff I’m thinking of is kinda thick & very stretchy. It’s almost like you could wear pink or grey & any moisture STILL hardly shows. Even when I wear black cotton, certain lighting makes it visible regardless. I have seen it ~ so I KNOW it exists =]
~~~HELP! No more hiding my hard-earned booty with a tied-on hoodie!~~~
Yoga Wear Guru answers:
Cotton is a big no-no for sweaty activities. It shows up sweat stains badly.
I would consider some tights in a Lycra/Spandex blend that is designed to wick away moisture from the body. They will rarely ever show sweat stains and if you already have a rockin body, you will look fantastic in them. Of course lighter colors are more prone to being noticed in. I would recommend darker colors but in all seriousness, good quality lycra blend tights will hide sweat marks and will keep you the coolest.
Consider brands like Under Armor, Skins, 2XU and other high quality brands when you make your selection as they will have put high amounts of time and development in giving a superior product.
No I am not a reseller or work for these companies. But I do have a fair amount of these garments and swear by them personally.
I’m not a female, I am a cross-dresser & I just want to say that I think you look great dressed up like a female, I wish I looked as good as you do. I checked out your photos & added you as a friend on Flickr, but honestly, you are a beautiful woman & I’d even let you dress me up as a girl if I could look just like you.
